Our Venue

The Courthouse Hotel, better known as The Courty, has been part of Newtown since 1859.

Sitting on Australia Street opposite the historic Newtown Courthouse, The Courty has long been a meeting place for the local community.

Today, it’s known for its iconic beer garden, laid-back atmosphere and welcoming crowd. Whether you’re here for a pub feed, a drink with mates, live sport or a weekend catch-up, The Courty is all about good times and the community around it.

Our Story So Far

The Courty first opened in 1859, originally as the Kingston Lodge Hotel, at a time when Newtown was still surrounded by paddocks, market gardens and bushland.

As the suburb grew through the late 1800s, hotels became important meeting places for workers, travellers and locals. In 1884, the venue was renamed the Court House Hotel, reflecting its location opposite the Newtown Courthouse.

Over the decades, the pub changed alongside Newtown. What began as a local meeting place for workers and tradespeople later became a gathering spot for students, musicians, artists and the wider Inner West community.

For much of the 20th century, the hotel was owned by Tooth & Company, one of NSW’s major brewing companies.

More than 160 years on, The Courty remains one of Newtown’s best-known neighbourhood pubs and a place generations of locals have called their own.
